Caravan Solar Panels
Caravan Solar Panels are a great way to keep your batteries charged when no power is available.
We all want to free camp where possible. Solar makes this possible for an extended period of time.
Most caravans now come with some sort of battery system. These systems use a 240V battery charger to maintain your battery whilst on 240V electricity.
When no 240V plug in electricity is available a solar panel system will automatically take
over the role and charge your batteries.
There are various sizes of solar panels, each will provide different amounts of battery
charging power. Multiple solar panels can be attached to give higher power output.
A typical installation will consist of 1 to 2 panels. More panels can be added.
The panels do not get hooked directly to the battery. A solar regulator/controller is needed to control the power the solar panels are making and controls the charge to your batteries.
A good quality regulator should be used. Also a regulator which suits the type of batteries
you have should be chosen. Most of the better quality solar regulator/controllers are suitable for use with most battery types.
Have a look at the pictures below. There are two panels installed on these vans in various
positions. As you can see they do not take up a lot of room.
All panels have a sturdy aluminium frame where brackets can be securely attached.
A common installation consists of 2 x 95W or 2 x 160W Mono solar panels and a 20Amp or 30Amp regulator.
The 30Amp regulator allows for addition panels to be added if required.
